"You can talk about us, but you can’t talk without us.” S6 is the backbone of communications in the Task Force. We provide 24 hour operations support for all means of communications. We do everything from PC builds, phone and printer support to maintaining all radio communications across all companies. The S6 team entered Operation Enduring Freedom with a new task; train all radio support team members to be automations support personnel. In theater our mission is 95% computer support, where as in normal operations we are 75% radio support and very little computer support. The task is not a small one, teaching all team members to support more than 200 users on everything from basic PC operations to network wiring and troubleshooting. I am very proud of the level of support my team has been able to provide the Task Force. All members of the S6 Team have stepped up and exceeded the expectations of the leaders both at the Company and Task Force level. The daily operations for the S6 team are anything but routine. We operate various hours, usually from just after day break to sunset and supply rotating “on call” personnel for after hours support. During the 12 hour duty day we answer the call for software, laptop and support of anything that seems to have a plug in the wall. We enforce the belief that each team member should be able to resolve any issues that arise. We have spent the first 3 months training all members of the team to be equally proficient in all support areas. During this time we have installed new network cabling throughout most of the office spaces for both the non-secure and secure networks. We have replaced the core network devices that connect us with the rest of the Combined Joint Task Force. We have installed over 90 new laptops, a number of new Voice over Internet phones and assisted with personally purchased Satellite setups to give the members of the Task Force the ability to have Internet in their living spaces. The knowledge and experience that we as National Guard soldiers bring to the fight has given us the ability to assign an NCO to work as a support team member for the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82 nd Airborne Helpdesk. S6 has been successful in establishing High Frequency radio communications on-line, a task that could not be completed by the previous unit. This gives us, as an aviation unit, the ability to talk great distances to both aircraft and other ground units. Along with working on the radio we have had to build new antenna mast supports for the roof of the Operations and Aviation Administration buildings as the existing ones are crumbling due to dry rotting wood. S6 fighting the war on terrorism by supporting our Task Force in any communication need that comes our way. One Team, One Fight! SGT Facemire, Michael TF Desert Hawk TF S6 NCOIC |
