The Arizona National Guard Psychological Health Program (NGPHP)

The National Guard Psychological Health Program (NGPHP) advocates, promotes, and guides National Guard members and their families by supporting psychological fitness for operational readiness. This program can support all National Guard and Reserve Branches.

The NGPHP promotes readjustment and readiness while offering consultation and support designed to address organizational and individual health care. Guard members and their families in every state and U.S. territory are eligible to participate. Resources are available to help with the resolution of personal problems, enhance the ability to balance and manage both work and other life responsibilities, and improve both operational readiness and civilian work performance. These programs are individually specific and supply behavioral health assessments and guidance on a variety of psychological health issues or concerns, clinical resources, and quality counseling services within local communities, state, and military systems.

The Director of Psychological Health (DPH) is available as a resource during regular and after work hours most weeks, but is required to adjust their time when working on weekends for drills, Yellow Ribbon events, and other related activities. When not immediately available, the DPH arranges for clinical back-up so that those experiencing emergencies have access to qualified behavioral health services. Each DPH is qualified and has designed services specific to the state they practice in, to assist in all efforts to resolve a continuum of mental health concerns, from mild adjustment disorders, to more severe conditions such as traumatic brain injury, suicidal and self injurious behaviors, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Overall, the DPH is charged with:

  • Providing high quality services that are National Guard member specific, friendly and comprehensive, while increasing state/territory utilization rates to promote National Guard member readiness.
  • Assisting program managers and supervisors to improve National Guard member's readjustment to civilian life by managing professional services and/or overseeing an individual's mental health needs.
  • Providing consultation and support to help address organizational and individual health care situations that have a detrimental effect on National Guard member's reintegration to civilian life.
  • Offering consultative guidance and support to state and territory National Guard senior management on state specific mental health needs based on Guard member demographics and mental health status.
  • Providing National Guard oriented mental health training throughout the full spectrum of the deployment cycle and everyday civilian life cycle.
