What is Child Abuse?

A lot of people don't realize it, but every day in the United States thousands of children and teens are abused by the people who are closest to them like family, friends, sitters, neighbors and sometimes even teachers and coaches. Although there are many formal and acceptable definitions of child abuse, child abuse consists of any act of commission or omission that endangers or impairs a child's physical or emotional health and development. Child abuse includes any damage done to a child which cannot be reasonably explained and which is often represented by an injury or series of injuries appearing to be non-accidental in nature.

For Kids

How do I know if I am being abused?

  • Child abuse comes in many forms and happens to a lot of people.
  • No one has the right to abuse you and if you are being abused, you are a victim.
  • Sometimes abusers scare or threaten kids so they won't tell.
  • Do not be alone with anyone who hurts you.
  • Listen to the little voice inside when it says that what is being done to you isn't right.
  • If you are being abused, please tell a safe person - that's someone you can trust like a teacher, counselor, school nurse, police officer, or parent.
  • If they don't believe you, keep telling until someone does believe you.

For Adults

What do I do if I think someone is abusing a child?

If a child discloses that he or she has been abused by someone, it is important that you listen to them most of all.

DO NOT

  • Investigate
  • Ask leading questions (a question that suggests the answer or contains the information the questioner is looking for – That man touched you, didn’t he?)
  • Make promises
  • Notify the parents or the caretaker

DO

  • Provide a safe environment (be comforting, welcoming, and a good listener).
  • Tell the child it was not his/her fault
  • Listen carefully
  • Know your limits
  • Tell the truth and make no promises
  • Report it!

To report child abuse, please call your local law enforcement agency.
